Chia seeds come from the herbaceous plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family, and originate in Mexico and Guatemala. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the best fats for heart health, explains Amanda Sauceda, a registered dietitian and gut health nutritionist based in Long Beach, California. The fiber, fat and protein in chia seeds serve as natural buffers to carbohydrate breakdown, explains Volpe. As a result, chia seeds can help balance blood sugar levels by curbing the glycemic index of carbohydrate-containing foods, she says.

“Because fiber, fat and protein all take longer to digest, these nutrients slow down the rate at which carbohydrates get broken down into sugars in the gut before they get absorbed into the body and converted into blood glucose (blood sugar),” Volpe explains.

It May Improve Gut Health

Chia seeds are beneficial for digestive health because they contain a combination of soluble and insoluble fiber that makes them a great choice for relieving constipation, according to Kulp.

What’s more, the soluble fiber and polyphenols chia seeds contain can work as prebiotics, feeding the good gut microbes which then produce substances that protect the lining of the intestines, thereby improving gut health, she adds.

Expert-Recommended Ways to Add Chia Seeds to Your Diet

Chia seeds can easily be added to smoothies, hot cereals or yogurt, says Kulp, as well as the following tasty ideas to try:

  • Make a pudding. One of the most popular ways to eat chia is by making chia pudding, a breakfast favorite (as it absorbs water and gelatinizes), Kulp says. To make chia pudding, combine 4 tablespoons of chia seeds, 1 cup of milk of your choice, 2 teaspoons of maple syrup or another sweetener, and ¼ teaspoon of vanilla in a container with a lid; stir well and let sit for three to four minutes, says Kulp. Stir it again, cover it with a lid and refrigerate the pudding for at least two hours, topping it with a fruit of your choice, she recommends.
  • Mix up some jam. You can make a jam using fresh berries and chia seeds–it’s perfect as a topping for pancakes, toast, yogurt or ice cream, says Sauceda. Simmer 1 cup of berries in a saucepan over low heat until they soften and release their juices. Then, turn off the heat, add some honey or sweetener to taste, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of chia seeds and let it sit until thickened, says Sauceda.
  • Swap it for an egg. If you run out of eggs or want to try an alternative, chia seeds can be used as an egg substitute for recipes like pancakes, muffins, or banana bread, says Sauceda. Mix a tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water and let it sit for 15 minutes until it forms a gel as a substitute for one egg.

While more fiber is a healthy addition, too much too fast can lead to gas, bloating and other digestive discomfort, says Kulp, so if you’re not used to eating fiber, be sure to take it slow.
