History

Prelude

Battle at Rook's Rest/Sandbox (24)

Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Hand of the King, marches north out of King's Landing with a Hightower army under Ser Gwayne Hightower and forces the submission of Houses Rosby, Stokeworth (who both freely contribute men to his army), and Darklyn. After the sack of Duskendale, Lord Gunthor Darklyn refuses to swear allegiance to King Aegon II and is beheaded by Cole, who then adds Gunthor's forces to his own army.[1]

Anticipating Criston's coming attack on his castle, Lord Simon Staunton calls for aid from Dragonstone; Rhaenys and Baela Targaryen fly to Rook's Rest on their dragons Meleys and Moondancer to aid him.[1]

Battle

The Greens march out of their encampment in the nearby woods and assault Rook's Rest, meeting resistance from the garrison there.[1]

During the battle, the Green army is suddenly joined by King Aegon and Prince Aemond with their dragons Sunfyre and Vhagar, boosting the morale of the Greens. Together, they manage to kill Princess Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys, but in the process Aegon and Sunfyre are both severely injured.[1]

The battle ends in the capture of Rook's Rest by the Greens.[1]

In the books

In , Baela Targaryen and Gwayne Hightower did not participate in the battle; Baela remained on Dragonstone[2] and Gwayne was in King's Landing serving in the City Watch.[3]

The green army numbered 100 knights, 500 men-at-arms, 1,800 sellswords, as well as added forces from Rosby, Stokeworth, and Duskendale. They suffered about 800 casualties.[2]
