This Chocolate Cream Pie is both rich and creamy. This pierecipe is quick and super easy since it just uses a store bought crust. We will be making a few pies for Easter guests now that my fear of making these quick and easy pies with a store bought crust has diminished. I shared my fear of making pies with you when I shared my yummy Coconut Cream Pie with you last week.

Chocolate Cream Pie

Each and every holiday, my grandmother would decide which pies were going to be included in the dessert line up. She would ask all of us for our input on whatpies to be included. My uncle and I were the Chocolate Cream Pie fans of the family. Just the thought of a holiday without chocolate cream pie would not make for a good holiday for either of us. One year, she was running a bit behind and didn’t have the time to finish up all of the pies. It was one sad day, ha ha. I still remember chocolate pie not being included with all her other yummy desserts.

After moving to Cincy, I no longer had grandmas pie for our holiday dinners. I will quite often put in an order at Frisch’s for a chocolate pie but it’s just not my grandmother’s chocolate pie.

Since her recipe is actually quite simple, I decided I would give it ago and make my own chocolate cream pie this year. I wanted to do a test run on this recipe to see if I could even come close to replicating it.

She does make her own pie crust from time to time. When she is pressed for time, she will purchase store bought pie crusts. Sometimes she will use a graham cracker crust, sometimes a chocolate cookie crust. But the pie is always pure chocolate heaven with whichever crust she made. A simple dessert that tastes delish.

I decide I would use a store bought crust for this pie just like I did with the coconut cream pie. You Could also use my Easy 4 Ingredient Homemade Pie Crust. The store bought works great with both of these cream pies. Plus, I wanted to keep the recipe as simple as possible.

The filling comes together so easily. Just a few minutes of cooking and it is ready to cool. I was amazed with how rich and smooththis chocolate pie turned out with so few ingredients.

The hubby and kids were super excited to see that I was making a chocolate pie. They even commented how long it has been since we enjoyed grandmas chocolate pie. Each of them enjoyed a piece after dinner and all of them came back for seconds later in the evening. I managed to get just once slice. Yup… just one slice. I know I will be the first in line to snag a piece of this pie on Sunday when we dig in to Easter desserts.

FAQs

Why didn t my chocolate cream pie set? ›

Take care, however, because you also don't want to overcook the filling which will make it very dense, and can even make it start to weep and separate. What causes a chocolate pie not to set up? A chocolate pie can not set up if it doesn't have enough cornstarch, egg yolks, or the filling wasn't cooked to 160 degrees.

What thickens a cream pie? ›

All-purpose flour is an easy solution, as you're sure to have it in your pantry. Since it's lower in starch, you'll use more of it than you would higher-starch thickeners. Quick-cooking tapioca makes filling bright and clear, but also gives it a stippled and somewhat sticky texture.

Why is my chocolate pudding pie runny? ›

If the pudding is already runny, the enjoyment will be reduced for sure! Pudding is usually runny because it has been stored in the refrigerator for too long or in an open space. Another cause could be due to improper cooking methods.

Why isn't my chocolate pie thickening? ›

Why Is My Chocolate Pie Runny? If your filing didn't set, it probably means that you didn't cook the filling long enough. Cornstarch needs to be heated in order to activate its thickening properties.

What do you do if your pie doesn't set? ›

Once you've noticed the problem, the only solution is to protect the crust and pop the pie back in the oven. If you look in the oven and see that your pecan pie crust has turned a perfect golden brown, you'll instinctively want to take it out -- even if the filling is too jiggly or even soupy.

What causes a cream pie to get watery? ›

The watery layer between the meringue and the filling (weeping) is usually caused by undercooking. This is where it is important to put your meringue onto hot filling so it can begin cooking right away.

What do I do if my cream pie is runny? ›

To fix this, you can cook the pudding mixture over low heat until it thickens, or add a thickener such as cornstarch or tapioca flour. Another possible reason for a runny banana cream pie is that the pie filling was not chilled properly before being added to the crust.

Why is my chocolate cream pie gritty? ›

Chocolate is very sensitive to heat and melts at just above body temperature. But if it gets too hot then it will turn grainy or lumpy and the fats will start to separate out. Sometimes this can be corrected by adding some cream or water.

Will chocolate pie filling thicken as it cools? ›

The pie bakes until the edges appear set and the middle is still jiggly; the filling will continue to thicken as it cools.

How do you fix pudding that didn't set? ›

Your best bet would be to mix a tablespoon of cornstarch and a teaspoon of sugar with some of the beverage and add it to the warm pudding. Heat it to a bubble and stir until it thickens. You may have to adjust the seasoning, particularly vanilla.

What is a substitute for cornstarch in cream pie? ›

All-purpose flour is an easy substitute for cornstarch; in fact you may see recipes for thickening pie fillings or soups with either. You'll need 2 tablespoons of flour for every 1 tablespoon of cornstarch in a recipe.

How do you make a pie filling firmer? ›

Tapioca-it's not just for pudding! This old-school ingredient may be what your great grandmother used to thicken her pies, and it's still great for making a perfect fruit pie with a clear, stable filling. Tapioca is derived from cassava (also known as yuca or manioc), a starchy root native to South America.

How much cornstarch to thicken a cream pie? ›

Cornstarch imparts a glossy sheen to the liquids it thickens, so it tends to be used more in sweet sauces and pie fillings than in savory sauces and gravies. Still, it works really well, and it's easy to use: For each cup of liquid, you want to thicken, start with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch in a small bowl.

How do you fix pastry cream that didn't set? ›

Runny pastry cream most often comes from undercooking the egg yolk mixture. If you remove it from the heat too soon, the amylase in the egg yolks won't break down and will prevent the cream from fully setting. If you find your crème pâtissière is too thin, return to heat and bring to a boil over medium heat to thicken.

How to fix a runny coconut cream pie? ›

Runny custard: You may have undercooked your custard. If it fails to thicken after bringing it to a low boil, it can be fixed by stirring in a slurry of equal parts cornstarch and water. Mix the two together and whisk it into the hot custard. Bring to a boil, stirring, until thickened.

Why didn't my chocolate pudding pie set? ›

If your pudding pie filling is runny, it likely means that you either overmixed or undermixed the pudding. If you mix it on too high or a speed or for too long, it can become watery. If you don't mix it long enough, the ingredients won't combine well enough to thicken properly.
