1. Brew the coffee.

Making the coffee is the most time-consuming step in this recipe. You can brew a cup exactly how you normally would, and it will work great, but we like to make our coffee slightly stronger for frozen coffee since we’re mixing it with ice and don’t want it to get diluted.

2. Let it cool completely.

If you have time, let the coffee cool for at least half an hour before you continue. Using hot coffee will leave you with a sickly, lukewarm drink instead of the refreshing frozen one you want.

3. Blend it.

Mix the coffee, ice, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and creamer – if you’re using it – together in your blender. Continue blending until all of the ingredients are well-mixed, and the consistency is light and fluffy.

4. Top and enjoy.

If you’re feeling fancy, top with whipped cream and use the chocolate syrup as a drizzle. Yum!

Tips & Tricks: How to Make the Best Frozen Coffee

Ice

The recipe we’ve given you has a lot of ice in it, but it’s by design. The goal is to make a light frozen drink with a texture halfway between a smoothie and a snow cone. If you don’t love the way your frozen coffee comes out, try messing around with how much ice you use. You might be surprised how dramatically different it tastes when the texture is different. Use less ice for a more smoothie-like consistency and more ice if you prefer a granular texture.

Be aware that changing the amount of ice you use will also affect the flavor. We like to keep the ratio of coffee to ice fixed at 2:1, so adjust the amount of coffee you use to keep the same balance and taste.

Coffee

It’s not too important what coffee you use to make frozen coffee. Since there are many ingredients, we recommend not using expensive coffee. You won’t be able to appreciate the subtle flavors in an expensive coffee when it’s blended with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

A robust dark roast is a perfect fit for frozen coffee. Dark roasts tend to have powerful flavors that can cut through the mix of flavors and ensure that the coffee flavor doesn’t get lost.

Cold Brew

One of our favorite tricks to make frozen coffee even better is to replace the regular brewed coffee with a cold brew. Instead of brewing a hot cup, start with a cold brew concentrate. This takes a little more preparation, but it’s worth it. Cold brewing coffee emphasizes natural sweetness, which fits perfectly in a drink like frozen coffee.

Our favorite cold brew recipe uses a 7:1 ratio of water to coffee and steeps at room temperature for 16 hours. Make sure you use coarsely ground coffee when you make cold brew. If you use pre-ground coffee, you run the risk of over-extraction and might wind up with bitter coffee.

An additional benefit of using cold brew is how concentrated it is. If you follow our 7:1 water to coffee ratio brewing recommendation, you’ll have no trouble tasting the coffee in your drink. Be careful, though. Concentrated cold brew has more caffeine than ordinary coffee, so you might want to stick to standard coffee if you’re sensitive to caffeine.
