How to discharge a static grass applicator? ›

Discharge the excess charge by placing the tip of the earth lead onto the charging plate. Do not touch the Plate or end of the earth lead with your hand during this process.

However, if you are making tufts (small clumps of tall grass to be glued on the layout after they are dry), flock is the general term used for the long grass fibers, but it is still static grass fibers. Another way to look at it is: Flock is the material, and static grass is the process.

Flocked applicators are sometimes referred to as 'lip gloss applicators' or 'doesfoot applictors' but are also used for applying concealers, eyeliners, cream eyeshadows, spot correctors, cuticle creams and many other cream or liquid products.

PVA, aka white glue, is widely regarded as the best glue to fix static grass in place and adding a little water seems to help the grass stand upright when using an electric applicator.

My first tip is super simple and sometimes those are the best ones. Once you've added a blob of pva glue to your base and sprinkled your static grass, just flip the model upside down and flick the bottom of the base hard with your finger a few times. That should help agitate it into a more upright position.

It works well. For me, the cost was worth it, compared to rolling my own. It arrived in 5 days and I was applying grass the same weekend.

If you want to add another layer then you can try a spray glue, but the normal type leaves small balls of glue, or you can wipe on some more white glue. The WWS method starts with a basing glue which, unlike white glue, doesn't skin over as fast. It then uses an acrylic layering spray which works like a dream.

Most any glue that can be used for other ground cover will function well with static grass. I wouldn't use anything but matt medium for ballast but for static I use white glue, just works better. I water it down just enough so that will stay viable for the grass as pure white glue skims over too fast.

I use a “T” pin. Turn on the applicator and start applying the static grass. When I'm using it I tap the basket or gently shake the basket up and down to get the fibers moving and falling out of the basket as I move about the area to be covered. If the area is flat you can get a nice even field of grass.
