Ingredient Notes

You only need 2 simple ingredients (and some optional add-ins) to make this frozen mixed berry compote!

Mixed Berry Compote (2)

Berries - If you happen to have an abundance of fresh berries, you can definitely use those! However, I like using frozen mixed berries for this compote because they're much cheaper and still taste amazing! Any combination of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries would be delicious.

Sugar - Just a little sugar enhances the natural sweetness of the berries and helps them release their juices. However, you could substitute with honey

Lemon Juice - Adding a little lemon juice helps balance the sweetness of the berries, but you can leave it out. If you have fresh lemon, you should also add a few teaspoons of lemon zest!

Fresh Mint - This is optional, but I love adding a little fresh mint to compliment the berries.

Optional Add-Ins

You can add in a ton of different extracts, herbs, or spices to suit your own taste and the season!

  • Fresh Basil - Instead of mint, you can substitute fresh basil for a more herbaceous flavor!
  • Dried Lavender - You can use either 1 teaspoon of dried culinary grade lavender or ¼ teaspoon oflavender extract to add some lovely floral flavor!
  • Vanilla - Adding vanilla extract or a whole vanilla bean is a classic! Add ½ to 1 teaspoon.
  • Almond Extract - I also just love adding ¼ teaspoon of almond extract to the berries.
  • Orange - Instead of lemon juice and lemon zest, orange juice and orange zest are a great option!
  • Ground Cinnamon - Adds a little warmth to the berries that's delicious in the fall or winter! Ground cardamom would also be delicious! I'd start with just a pinch up to ¼ teaspoon.
  • Alcohol - You can also add flavor to the berries with liqueurs like Chambord, Kirsch, Grand Marnier, or Amaretto. Start with just 1 tablespoon.
