Letters to the Editor: Readers discuss Trump verdict, presidential election; couple praises cemetery leader
Questions ahead of presidential election
Things I think about leading up to the presidential election:
I am retired. Do I want Social Security and Medicare reduced or eliminated? Many/most conservatives do.
I spent 38 years as a public school teacher. Do I want my taxes taken from free public education to help support private education? Do I want libraries to be censored? Many/most conservatives support both.
Many of my relatives, friends, neighbors and former students do not look like me or share my religious views or my views regarding LBGTQ+ people. Do I want anyone different from me or my views rounded up or discriminated against? Many/most conservatives do.
I am a woman who has a daughter, granddaughter, sister and female friends and relatives. Do I want them to have the same reproductive rights that I have had? Many/most conservatives do not.
I believe in the separation of powers and in government checks and balances as laid out in the U.S. Constitution. I do not believe all power should reside in the president or that the DOJ or military serve at the will of the president. Most/many conservatives do not agree.
As American citizens and voters, we have a huge responsibility to really listen and think about what we believe being American and maintaining our freedom means.

Kudos to Mark Sands, Grand Island Cemetery
On May 25 we visited the Grand Island Cemetery to decorate graves. We went to the office of Cemetery Superintendent Mark Sands. It was Saturday but Mark was on duty to help us on the Memorial Day weekend. We both had questions about our family cemetery plots. We went with Mark and looked at both plots. Mark explained how many people could be buried in each plot. We returned to his office, and Mark got on his computer and gave each of us a print-out. Now we each have a computer print-out to explain everything on paper.
Mark was helpful in so many ways. We were both born and raised in Grand Island. So it makes us feel good Mark is in charge of the cemetery.
Mayor Roger Steele, we feel the city of Grand Island is blessed to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable employee.

GOP delegation shows fealty to Trump
Trump drew support from members of Nebraska’s all-GOP Congressional delegation, who took issue with the guilty verdict itself.
Their issue was, “Today’s verdict is based largely on discredited witnesses.” Those discredited witnesses were Trump’s associates.
Is the GOP delegation calling the 12 jurors that were chosen by attorneys on both sides, liars?
Do they believe they are loyal Republicans just standing up for the Grand Old Party? They, somehow hypocritically, are unconcerned that their leader is a moral degenerate.
The jury made America great again.

Christians, it is time to stand
Reflecting on an article (May 2024) by George Barna research: “We’ve reached a time of Christian invisibility.” We are at a critical time in the moral climate of our culture today. People have become more selfish, churches less influential, pastors less Bible-centric. Families have invested less time and energy in spiritual growth, especially with their children. The lack of biblical training is seen even in some seminaries and Christian schools. As in any endeavor, leadership is reflected in the masses, even with good intentions.
The biblical world-view is disappearing because families have not discipled their children, as this writer confesses. But we don’t have to stay in this dilemma. It is up to parents to change this trend with the help of the church. Christ is the most important factor in life as he forms the foundation for our world-view. Many people claim to be Christian, but unless Scripture influences your work, play, gender/sexuality, philosophy, business, school, all aspects of your life, it is superficial and irrelevant. We have to do more than simply proclaim Jesus is our Lord.
We know it takes time and energy to accomplish this as Satan’s attack on family is to make us too busy to instruct ourselves and children in Scripture. How else are we to know Christ? We must fight back or lose our children to a life-style of destruction. Men must step up and lead their families in living and teaching a biblical life-style and be reinforced by the churches. A good book to order for parents is, “Will They Stand” from Answers in Genesis website.
Voltaire stated that if you teach a people to believe what is absurd, it is very easy to get them to accept atrocities. We can no longer be indifferent on the issues. It is time to stand.

Celebrating progress during Pride Month
During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month, we reflect on the progress we have made as a nation in the fight for justice, inclusion, and equality while reaffirming our commitment to support LGBTQI+ rights at home and abroad. President Biden often says that America can be defined by one word: Possibilities. This month, we celebrate the generations of LGBTQI+ people who have fought to make the possibilities of our nation real for every American.
Today, the rights of LGBTQI+ Americans are under relentless attack. Members of the LGBTQI+ community — especially people of color and trans people — continue to face discrimination and cruel, persistent efforts to undermine their human rights. An onslaught of dangerous anti-LGBTQI+ legislation has been introduced and passed in states across the country, targeting transgender children and their parents and interfering with their access to health care. These unconscionable attacks have left countless LGBTQI+ families in fear and pain. All of this compounded has been especially difficult on LGBTQI+ youth, of whom many seriously considered attempting suicide in the last year — a devastating reality that our nation must work urgently to address.
This month, we remind the LGBTQI+ community that they are loved and cherished. The Biden administration sees for who you are — deserving of dignity, respect, and support. Today and every day, the Biden administration stands with every LGBTQI+ American on the ongoing struggling against intolerance, discrimination and justice. We condemn the dangerous state laws and bills that target LGBTQI+ youth. And we remain steadfast in Biden’s commitment to helping LGBTQI+ people in America and around the world live free from violence.

Letters to the Editor: Readers discuss Alzheimer's Awareness Month, lab-grown meat
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. As Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter, I am encouraging everyone to take charge of their brain health by offering these four suggestions to take charge of your brain health:
1.) Incorporate healthy habits that may reduce the risk of cognitive decline: Research shows that adopting healthy habits may reduce the risk of cognitive decline. As many as 40% of dementia cases worldwide may be attributable to modifiable risk factors.
2.) Learn the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementia: Many people equate Alzheimer’s to memory loss — and while that is one of the most common signs — there are other warning signs that can signal cognitive decline, including altered judgment, mood changes, challenges in decision-making, and planning and carrying out projects.
3.) Be proactive in addressing memory and thinking problems: Studies show many individuals experiencing memory and thinking problems often put off discussing them with a doctor. However, early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other dementia offers the best opportunity for care, management and treatment.
4.) Help accelerate disease-related re-search: Clinical trials hold the key to new and better Alzheimer’s disease treatments. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, caregivers and healthy volunteers are needed to participate in clinical trials that help advance Alzheimer’s research.

I’m writing in response to ‘Lab-grown meat faces opposition.’
I was born and raised in rural Nebraska, including the small towns of Genoa, St. Edward and Albion, surrounded by traditional animal agriculture. But I refuse to be stuck supporting old school practices that do not benefit the greater amount of earthlings for a livable future. Change can be difficult but it is necessary for creating a healthy, safe, promised future that is more in line with our professed values and morals.
According to an infograph made by Ketchum, 72% of generation Z consumers say animal welfare is a value they look for when making a food purchase. Data for Progress shows, 80% of likely voters said that preventing animal cruelty was a matter of personal moral concern. In an interview article of Psychology Today, Kimberly Moore mentions how the United Nations recognizes “that the health and welfare of humans are connected to the health and well-being of animals.”
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Ari Nessel has explained the banning of cultivated meat is striking blows against American principles of freedom to personally choose, innovation and the free-market competition that has driven our country’s growth to ultimately benefit consumers by lowering prices. You probably agree it would be un-American to ban proven society dangers of junk food, cigarettes etc.
Traditional and industrial animal agriculture along with one dimensional supporters also criticize making plant-based food look and taste like meat, while they “literally make dead animals look like food. A cow does not look like a burger. Pigs don’t look like bacon. A chicken does not look like a nugget.” The Bearded Vegan.
I love innovation when it allows us to show love and compassion to others (animals and human animals).
