Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2024)

May 22 2007 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 2007 WWW.POST-GAZETTE.COM E-5 By Patricia Sullivan The Washington Post Leonard D. Eron, a psychologist whose 50 years of research led him to warn society that children who watched violent television shows tend to show aggressive and destructive behavior later in life, died May 3 of congestive heart failure at his home in Lindenhurst, Ill. He was 87. Aggression is a learned behavior, Dr. Eron determined, and watching violent TV shows, including cartoons, makes violence seem normal to children.

These conclusions, not without controversy in the television industry, grew out of a long-term study of 800 people from upstate New York who were third-graders in 1960. He followed up with them 10 years later, 20 years later and 40 years later, in 2000. The study is ongoing. His findings have been widely cited and duplicated over the years, and he testified multiple times before Congress. By Michael Birnbaum Pittsburgh Post-Gazette George L.

Collins installed more than 300 pipe organs during his career. At upward of one month per instrument, a lot of time spent in organ chambers. Born in Wingate Township in Union County, N.C., in 1935, Mr. Collins was a longtime resident of Peters and had repaired organs in both the Charlotte, N.C., and Pittsburgh areas. Mr.

Collins died Saturday at Canonsburg General Hospital of lung cancer. He was 71. Mr. Collins answered a newspaper ad for an organ repairman while attending Oakhurst High School in Oakhurst Township, N.C., 55 years ago. At the time, he was just looking for a job, said his wife of 52 years, Jane Collins.

But he quickly became attached to the world of organ installation and repair. After a few years, the couple moved to the Pittsburgh area from their native North Carolina so that Mr. Collins would have to travel less for his job. In Pittsburgh, Mrs. Collins noted, a church on every Mr.

Collins knew how to get others interested in his work. Whenever he entered a church, he would loudly yell on his way to the faulty instrument, said friend and fellow repairman David Richards. And knew the organ, and he knew how to explain it in said the Rev. Carl Gentile of St. John Fisher Church in Churchill.

Mr. Collins had been repairing the organ for longer than the 13 years Father Gentile has been at the church. Bill Siedle, another organ repairman, recalls being stumped by a particularly stubborn instrument. He called Mr. Collins to come for a consultation.

Mr. Collins went straight to the organ and identified the problem in just minutes. this day and age, there are so many people who claim to be the best at said Mr. Siedle, he really Mr. dedication to organ repair continued even though cancer plagued the last years of his life.

He worked through colon cancer in 2004, and kept working even during the more recent fight with lung cancer. He had his right lung removed in January, and within days of getting out of the hospital, drove more than a hundred miles by himself to fix an organ in DuBois, according to his wife. felt that he owed it to the she said. While organs may have dominated Mr. life, he still had enough time to be an active father to his three children, coaching many different sports but said Mrs.

Collins and leading Cub Scout troops. Mr. Collins also golfed and enjoyed the outdoors. In addition to his wife, Mr. Collins is survived by two sons, George L.

Collins Jr. of San Diego and James Collins of Washington, one daughter, Peggi Collins of Mount Juliet, three sisters, Ethel Gillespie of Concord, N.C., Frances Ellis of Pembroke, and Shirley Gregory of Stallings, N.C.; one brother, Wade Collins of Charlotte and one granddaughter. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Dedicated church organ repairman GEORGE L. COLLINS Oct. 6, 1935 May 19, 2007 Real estate lawyer loved to golf By Torsten Ove Pittsburgh Post-Gazette John T.

Richards a real estate lawyer listed several times as one of the best in the field, died Sunday of prostate cancer. He was 76 and lived in Hampton, although he spent three or four months a year in Florida. A former football star who graduated at the top of his law school class, Mr. Richards and a partner, Richard Kelly formed the Richards and Kelly law firm in 1968. The firm had its offices in the Law and Finance Building, Downtown, for decades until moving to Warrendale three years ago.

Two of Mr. children, John T. Richards III, 53, of McCandless, and Veronica Richards, 51, of Pine, practiced law with their father at the firm along with Mr. son until the families went their separate ways in 2005. In his retirement, Mr.

Richards continued to work as a partner with John and Veronica at their new firm, Richards and Richards LLP, which they formed in January 2006. Much of Mr. work as a real estate lawyer fell below the radar of the media, but he was involved in some high-profile developments over the years. His firm handled some of the acquisitions of farmland for what became Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park and represented the Urban Redevelopment Authority in purchasing houses along the route of Interstate 279 in the 1960s and early 1970s. Mr.

Richards grew up on the North Side, the son of a sheet metal worker, and played quarterback well enough at Oliver High School in the late 1940s to win a scholarship to Ohio State University. His college football career ended when he was injured in a scrimmage, but he had a long-term plan to become a lawyer. The military came first. He just missed the Korean War, but through the ROTC program he served two years in the Army as a lieutenant at Fort Meade, where the first of his four children was born. After returning home, Mr.

Richards and his wife, Rosemary, lived on the North Side before moving to Ross. He went to work at a title insurance company while attending night classes at Duquesne University Law School. Having grown up in somewhat humble circ*mstances, Mr. Richards was ambitious and outgoing. He graduated at the top of his class in 1959, then worked at a small law firm for a year before deciding that he could do better for himself on his own.

He initially took on divorce and personal injury litigation pay the his son said, but later focused on real estate law exclusively. As his career progressed, Mr. Richards was recognized on several occasions by an annual publication rating him among the best lawyers in America working in real estate. Beyond his career in law, Mr. Richards and his wife enjoyed traveling to such exotic locales as Hong Kong, once riding the Orient Express.

But his chief passion was golf. At a course in Florida in January 2006, he finally made a hole-in-one after years of near-misses. come close so many said his son. time he hit it into the hole on the fly and it popped This time he nailed it from 130 yards and enjoyed the thrill of a lifetime. Besides his wife of 53 years, son and daughter, Mr.

Richards is survived by another son, Charles, of Shaler, and daughter Lynn Sebastian of Plum. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at George A. Thoma Funeral Home in McCandless. Torsten Ove can be reached at or 412-231-0132.
